Alcoholic arrested for Mangaluru church statue vandalisation

Mangaluru, December 15, 2016: Udupi Police on Dec 12 arrested a person who was said to be responsible for the vandalisation of the statue of St Antony at Our Lady of Health Church, Shirva.

The statue of St. Anthony was found vandalised on Dec 11and another statue of St. Lawrence located nearby was found displaced. Though there were two CCTVs, both were not functioning.

The accused has been identified as Benedict D’Souza, 56. The person had done this act in an inebriated state on Sunday (Dec 11) between 1pm and 3pm. Following this arrest, IGP declared a reward for the team who caught hold of the accused expeditiously and prevented any untoward incident.

D’Souza, a driver by profession, stays all alone since his wife, who is employed in the Middle East stays with his daughter.

Earlier, the Parish Pastoral Council of Shirva Church, warning of protest, gave a three day deadline to the Udupi police to nab the accused.

On Monday, the Church was visited by Bishop of Udupi diocese Gerald Isaac Lobo, MP Oscar Fernandes, MA Gafoor, chairman, Minority Commission, Chief Whip and MLC Ivan D’Souza, Udupi-Chikkamagaluru MP Shobha Karandlaje, Kaup MLA Vinay Kumar Sorake, among others to take a stock of the situation.
