Armed men burgle bishop’s residence

Six armed men broke into the bishop’s residence in Baruipur in West Bengal today, ransacking rooms before making off with cash and valuables worth about 50,000 rupees (US$ 1,137).They also assaulted the vicar general, Jesuit Father Anil Mitra, who suffered minor injuries.
Bishop Salvadore Lobo of Baruipur is presently in Europe and is expected to return next week.
Baruipur is some 30 kilometers south of Kolkata, the state capital.
Among the items stolen in the robbery was a monstrance with the Blessed Sacrament.
Police were called at about 4 a.m.
