PunjabPunjab, January 04, 2012: Punjab’s deputy chief minister, Sukhbir Singh Badal, has assured the Christians in Punjab that the state government is committed toward their welfare.

Badal was attending a Christmas dinner hosted by the Jalandhar archdiocese on December 23.

Nearly 200 people packed the Major Trinity Seminary auditorium which reverberated with carols sung in English and Punjabi.

Badal, who “thoroughly enjoyed” the proceedings, said he was looking forward to the occasion to come and greet Christians “on the joyous occasion of Christmas”.

He promised to make land available for burial grounds and for a Masih Bhavan, a centre for all denominations of Christians in the state.

The Punjab government had recently appointed four marriage registrars as additional members of the Commission for minorities all of whom were honored on the occasion.

Bishop Anil Joseph Couto of Jalandhar offered a piece of cake to Badal who also stayed for the fellowship dinner that followed.

The prelate said “unless we are ready to humble ourselves and become powerless like baby Jesus in the manger we will never be able to comprehend the mystery of God’s Kingdom …… which is the only way to justice and peace in this world”.
