July 26, 2011: The Home Ministry today allowed the British nun, whose visa was extended for one month, to stay in India as long as she likes.

Home Minister P. Chidambaram intervened to restore visa “without limit of time” for Sister Jacqueline Jean McEwan.

“The notice (for her to leave India) issued by the Foreign Regional Registration Office was a mistake, presumably based on the ground that complete documents had not been submitted,” Chidambaram said.

“Orders are being issued today. She can stay as long as she likes,” he added.

The 63-year-old Montfort missionary nun is popularly known as Mother Teresa of Sumanahalli in Bangalore.

The society, founded by Claretian Father George Kannanthanam in 1978, provides care for leprosy patients and other marginalized people in southern India.

She has been running a mobile clinic for leprosy patients since 1982 and has been a resident of Bangalore since then by renewing her visa every year.

Sister McEwan was asked to leave the country on the ground that she did not possess a valid visa.
