Catholic church burnt in NagalandAn under-construction Catholic church was allegedly burnt by Baptists in Phokhungri village near Dimapur, Nagaland. Yatetsu, a Catholic, said he was manhandled by a group led by the village pastor and his associate on May 28. The village council locked the victim’s house on the same day and imposed on him a fine of 10,000 rupees. His family and another family were expelled from the village, a press release issued by the Pochury Catholic Union (PCU) said.

A 2004 resolution passed by the Baptist-dominated village bars people from introducing other denomination. The resolution empowers the village council to confiscate the property of the violators and banish them. “No consideration will be made to the main agent and campaigner for the denomination,” it warned. The PCU had filed a case challenging the resolution in Aug 2010. Subsequently, a judgment on January 7 ruled that the resolution was unconstitutional. The judgment emboldened Catholics to begin work on the church, PCU said. The destruction of the church “was in contravention of the court order,” it added.
