THE CHURCH AND HUMAN RIGHTS Tamil Nadu, October 22, 2012: Bishop Yvon Ambroise, Chairperson of CBCI Office for Justice, Peace & Development (OJPD) released the book The Church and Human Rights during a State-level consultation on justice and peace issues, at TASSOS Centre, Trichy, in Tamil Nadu on October 19, 2012. The first copy of the book was received by Fr Aruldass, Director of Tamilnadu Social Service Society (TASSOS).

While releasing the book, Bishop Yvon said that the book was an Indian edition of a document brought out by the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, and that OJPD had obtained permission to publish it in India for the purpose of ‘animating the People of God toward a concerted, concrete engagement with promotion and defence of human rights’. The Bishop thanked Fr Charles Irudayam, Secretary, OJPD, for rendering the book available for the Indian readers.

The Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace had come up with the first edition of The Church and Human Rights on the occasion of the twenty-fifth anniversary of the United Nations’ Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the second edition in 2011.

In his letter of permission to OJPD, the Pontifical Council Secretary, Bishop Mario Toso, had expressed his hope “that the document, after its publication in India, will arouse in the Indian readers a renewed zeal for the cause of human rights and eventually for the cause of justice and peace.”

The one-day State-level consultation, at which the book was released, was organised by OJPD and TASOSS to review the justice and peace issues in Tamil Nadu. And the consultation was attended by the Justice and Peace Secretaries from the dioceses of Tamil Nadu-Pondicherry region. There were around 20 participants who expressed their readiness to work for justice and peace issues in this region and decided to make the people aware of legal issues through the publication of leaflets in the regional language with different themes. The consultation came to an end with the vote of thanks by Fr Jeyabalan, Assistant Director of TASOSS.
