Federation of Konkani Catholic Associations has “strongly and forcefully” demanded an investigation into Father K J Thomas’ murder by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) as the murder involves “inter-state ramifications.”

In an official statement, the Federation has expressed shock over the killing of “a mild, soft-spoken and harmless elderly priest.” It also finds the involvement of language groups or thieves suspicious, as suggested by initial investigations and newspaper reports.

“We will be forced to resort to peaceful protests as part of our campaign to urge the police authorities to expedite the investigation and also to press our demand for a comprehensive CBI prove to nab the culprits,” the Federation has stated.

Seminary not helping probe: police

Preliminary investigations suggest that Fr. Thomas was attacked after answering a knock on his door.

Fr. ThomasKarnataka, April 17, 2013: Police, investigating the killing of a seminary rector in Bangalore, has claimed that the lack of progress in the case is because the seminary authorities are not cooperating with the probe.

“We are investigating the case from several angles, but we have hit a wall,” a police official connected with the investigation said.

Two police teams — a City Crime Branch (CCB) team and a team from the Yeshwanthpur station and RMC Yard station — are investigating the case.

“Fr Patrick Xavier (who resides in the room next to Fr Thomas’) was in his room when the incident occurred, but he claims that he did not hear the assailants,” the official said.

He said that it was impossible not to notice when unknown assailants are making a huge noise inside the seminary premises.

“He is not a suspect, but we hope he will give us some clues which we can check out. We are hoping to nail the culprits soon,” the official said.

An IPS officer involved in the probe said they have verified the contacts listed on Fr Thomas’ phone, but most of them are people in Kerala.

“The watchmen are also suspects and we have asked the Gurkha association to provide information on those who had quit the job in the recent past,” the officer said.

The Federation of Konkani Catholic Associations has yesterday demanded a CBI investigation into the murder that took place earlier this month in Bangalore.

Fr. Thomas, 62, was found by another priest lying in a pool of blood in a corridor near his room at St. Peter’s Seminary in Bangalore on April 1.

Preliminary investigations suggest that Fr Thomas was attacked after answering a knock on his door.

Bloodstains found in the corridor suggest the priest had tried to escape or the body had been dragged to where it was found by the coffee room, a police official said.

He also said boot marks made from the dead priest’s blood suggest there was more than one assailant.
