New Delhi, May 10, 2012: He said he was taught the verse when he was studying in a school run by the Franciscan nuns.

Home Minister P. Chidambaram today quoted from the Bible to answer those who leveled corruption charges against him and his son.

“God forgive them for they know not what they do,” Chidambaram told reporters outside Parliament today.

He said he was taught the verse when he was studying in a school run by the Franciscan nuns.

Janta Party President Subramanian Swamy has said that in 2006 Chidambaram, as finance minister, cleared the sale of Aircel to Malaysian firm Maxis only when his son Arti Chidambaram acquired stake in the telecom company Aircel.

Swamy alleged that this move allowed Arti to make huge financial gains.

Yashwant Sinha of the Bharatiya Janata Party (Indian People’s Party) asked for an explanation by Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee over the issue in the Lok Sabha today.

Chidambaram, however, quoted his son saying “Neither I nor any member of my family holds any share in Aircel or Maxis.”
