Church officials extend helping hand to fire victims

Srinagar,  November 22, 2016: The Church people in Kashmir has initiated process to provide immediate relief to the victims of a devastating fire in Srinagar district that took the life of a person and left many injured.

The fire, that took place in the city’s Dalgate area on Nov. 21, also reduced 25 houses to ashes.

Muhammad Ramzan was burnt alive and his body was recovered from the debris of a house gutted in a massive fire. Several others received burn injuries.

Local police estimated that at least 44 families in the area have lost shelter due the incident.

“We are investigating about what led to such a devastation. So far we cannot say with certainty about what was the main reason,” a local police official told ucanews.com.

Jammu and Kashmir Diocese, which covers the entire state, has decided to provide possible help to the victims, including medical aid.

Father Roy Mathew, parish priest based in Srinagar, said, “as the temperature is witnessing a dip in the valley, the Church in the initial phase shall provide warm clothing, bedding and ration to the fire victims.”

The Parish Priest said that the priority for the church would be to help victims in rebuilding their lives.

“Those who have lost their dwellings hail from a very poor background. They generally comprise of laborers, sweepers and house maids,” he added.

He said that the Church would also explore avenues to rebuild the damaged shelters of the fire victims and seek collaboration with some NGOs in this regard.

Meanwhile, Burn Hall School, that comes under the aegis of Catholic Social Service Society in Srinagar, organized distribution of relief material for the victims at its premises.

Immediate necessities like blankets, warm clothes, bags of rice and pulses and cooking oil were distributed to the 50 victim families.
