Kochi, December 18, 2016: Syro-Malabar Church head Cardinal Mar George Alencherry said Christmas celebrations would be less extravagant this year, as a result of demonetisation. Speaking to mediapersons here on Friday, on the eve of the 80th birthday of Pope Francis, he said, “Though it is not easy to curb extravaganza through such laws, it would create awareness among the people on squandering money,” said the prelate.

The Cardinal, however, pointed out that the demonetisation should have been implemented after adequate preparations. “It may be noted that most economists who have commented on the matter criticised the lack of preparedness,” he said, and urged the government to consider the views of those who support and oppose the recent changes to the financial sector.

The Cardinal also welcomed the Supreme Court’s decision to close liquor outlets functioning along the national highways. “Liquor outlets operating on roadsides could be a temptation for travellers. Everyone should welcome the court order in the larger interest of society,” he added.

“The Pope has indicated his wish to visit India, which was ratified by the Union Ministry of External Affairs. I hope the Pope would include Kerala in his itinerary,” said the Cardinal.
