Dhaka celebrates 400 years of the presence of Christian faith Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O’Connor is in Bangladesh as the special Papal legate to celebrate the 125th anniversary of the creation of the Diocese of Dhaka and 400 years of the presence of the Christian faith in this part of South Asia.

During the first day of the official visit, the Cardinal visited a seminary in Dhaka to celebrate Mass and preach. In his homily, the Cardinal called on the seminarians to make Christ the centre of their lives: “when Christ becomes the centre of our lives, there will not be room for serious division among us – so make Christ the centre of your life.”

He spoke of his pleasure at beginning the anniversary celebrations in a seminary: “I am very pleased that my first opportunity to meet formally with the Church in Bangladesh is with you. You are the bridge between what you have received from the past and what you will pass on faithfully in the future.”

And carried the blessing of the Holy Father: “I have every confidence in you, and I bring to you the blessing of the Holy Father – with my prayer that you will generously respond to God’s call, and that the love of Christ may be always your strength, comfort and hope.”

On this first day, he also met with bishops gathered for their Bishops Conference meeting. He reflected on the office of bishop in the context of the new evangelisation and the Year of Faith. The reflection centered on the four key documents of the Second Vatican Council and concluded with a call for the Bishops of Bangladesh to take care of themselves:

“Look after yourselves. Work hard but you need time to rest, to read, to meet with friends. Think also of your Nuncio as your friend. He is a good man faithfully serving the Holy Father, you the Bishops and the Church here.”

On Tuesday 6 November, the Cardinal will preach at a Mass with the Bangladesh Conference of Religious and on Wednesday 7 November, he will address the Islamic Foundation.

Friday 9 November will see the grand celebration of the 125th anniversary of the Archdiocese and the inauguration of the Year of Faith. The Cardinal will preach at the Anniversary Solemn Mass and address ecumenical guests and guests representing other religions.
