Tamil Nadu, January 13, 2012: Pope Benedict XVI on Jan. 13 appointed Auxiliary Bishop Lawrence Pius Dorairaj of Madras-Mylapore as bishop of Dharmapuri, Tamil Nadu. He replaces Bishop Joseph Antony Irudayaraj. Bishop Dorairaj was born on June 14, 1954, in Santhome in Chennai, and ordained a priest on Dec. 28, 1981. His Episcopal ordination was on Feb. 21, 1999. He was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Madras-Mylapore on Dec. 28, 1998. Bishop Doairaj was a professor at the Sacred Heart Major Seminary before he became the prelate.

Dharmapuri has a population 2,999,731 with Catholics 54,316, priests 83 and religious 307. He succeeds Bishop Joseph Anthony Irudayaraj S.D.B., whose resignation from the pastoral care of the same diocese the Holy Father accepted, upon having reached the age limit.

Mumbai, January 16, 2012: Pope Benedict XVI has accepted the resignation of Auxiliary Bishop Bosco Penha of Bombay.

Bishop Penha had put in his papers after he attained the retirement age of 75.

He was born in 1937 in Mumbai and ordained a priest in 1967. The prelate was appointed the auxiliary Bishop of Bombay in 1987.

Rector of St. Pius X Seminary at Goregaon, Mumbai, Bishop Penha  is one of the archdiocese’s vicar generals with special responsibility for the laity.

He also chairs the western regional bishops’ Commission for Laity and Small Christian Communities.
