Kerala, March 16, 2012: The metropolitan said absence of members from dalit and minority communities in Hazare’s core team stands testimony to this fact.
The anti-corruption campaign led by Anna Hazare went against the interests of dalit communities in India, says a bishop of the Jacobite Syrian Christian Church.
“Meritocracy was one of the major issues raised during the agitation and slogans against reservations originated from protesters,” Bishop Geevarghese Mar Coorilos, Niranom diocesan metropolitan, yesterday said during a lecture on “media and mass agitations.”
The lecture was part of a program in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala capital, to mark the fourth death anniversary of C Rajeshkumar, a journalist with a local newspaper.
The metropolitan said Hazare had never asked his followers to stop shouting against reservation. The absence of members from dalit and minority communities in Hazare’s core team indicated that his supporters did not approve B.R. Ambedkar, a dalit leader who led the drafting of the Indian Constitution.
The Hazare team’s “disregard to the constitution drafted by Ambedkar stands testimony to this fact,” the bishop added.
The prelate regretted that the media had created “so much hype and hysteria” about the Hazare campaign portraying it as “the biggest” people’s movement. “Media has the power to break and make news. It has played a major role in projecting what is a people’s movement and what is not,” he added.
The Jacobite prelate regretted that the media shifted its focus from the central point while reporting people’s movement.
