The Bhartiya Janata Party government has sanctioned a total of 170 million rupees for the prayers.
Each temple would get 5,000 rupees for holding “special prayers” for rain.
The circular in regard to the prayers was distributed to the temples by the department of revenue.
The opposition parties in the state criticized the government’s move and said that the money used for the rituals could have been utilized for relief work.
The state government, however, said that it was important to chant the prayers for the welfare of the drought-hit state where there is no water for people, cattle or crops.
