Metropolitan Mar Nicholovos elected to the new WCC Central CommitteeBusan, November 06, 2013: The 10th Assembly of the World Council of Churches has elected the Central Committee today during an executive session at its proceedings in Busan, Republic of Korea.

The Assembly elected a 150-member Central Committee, which serves as the principal decision-making body of the Council between assemblies. From North America region representing the Oriental Orthodox Churches Zachariah Mar Nicholovos, the diocesan Metropolitan of Northeast America of Malankara Orthodox Church has been elected as the central committee member for the next 7 years.

Bishop Dr Isaac Mar Philoxenos from Mar Thoma Syrian Church of Malabar, Modayil Mani Philip from Church of South India, Rt Rev Taranath Sugnanam Sagar from Methodist Church in India and Roma Ann Nisha Prodhan from Church of North India are the other members elected from India to the central committee of the WCC.

Out of the 150 Central Committee members, a total of eleven members is from Oriental Orthodox Churches all over the world. They are: H.E. Prof. Dr Bishoy of Damietta (Coptic Orthodox Church) H.G. Youannes (Coptic Orthodox Church), H.E. Eustathius Matta Roham (Syrian Orthodox Patriarchate of Antioch) H.E. Dr Vicken Aykazian (Armenian Apostolic Church – Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin), H.G. Nareg Alemezian (Armenian Apostolic Church – Holy See of Cilicia), Dr Theodora Issa (Syrian Orthodox Patriarchate of Antioch) , Ms Paula Marie Der Matoian (Armenian Apostolic Church – Holy Etchmiadzin), Dr Abba Haile Mariam Melese Ayenew (Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church) , Mr Yilikal Shiferaw Messelu (Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church) , Ms Teny Pirri-Simonian (Armenian Apostolic Church – Holy See of Cilicia) and H.G. Zachariah Mar Nicholovos (Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church).

From North America region, Bishop Alexander of Toledo and the Bulgarian Diocese of Orthodox Church in America, Anne Glynn-Mackoul Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Antioch and All the East, Dr Audeh B. Quawas Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Jerusalem and V. Rev. Dr Jack Khalil Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Antioch and All the East are representing the Eastern Orthodox Churches.

The new 150-person Central Committee counts women: 39%, men: 61%, youth: 13%, indigenous persons: 5%, persons with disabilities: 2%, ordained: 68%, and 32% of the members of the committee are lay persons. The nominations committee worked with a pool of names put forward by the WCC’s 345 member churches.

A 25-person executive committee, a moderator and two vice-moderators will be elected by the Central Committee later this week.
