Nepal HelpNew Delhi, May 7, 2015: The Central Board of Direct Taxation (CBDT) on Wednesday permitted Caritas India, the national relief agency of the Church, to procure relief aid for the survivors of last week’s massive earth quake in Nepal.

There was a certain delay in procurement of relief materials due to pending approval from CBDT and it was cleared on Wednesday. With formal approval, Caritas India is geared up to fast track procurement of relief materials from India to Nepal, said a press release.

Anthony Chettri, the agency’s head of program support in India said a team in India is all set for speedy procurement of necessary aids in consultation with Caritas Nepal.

A six-member team from India is supporting Caritas Nepal along with nine other Caritas member organizations from across the globe. Besides the technical support, Caritas India is also providing psycho-social support to the victims.

Caritas India also plans to set up two medical camps in a week’s time from now, one in Kathamndu and another in Sindhupalchowk led by Camillian task force.

Caritas network is working in seven of the most affected districts: Gorkha, Okhaldunga, Sindhupalchowk, Kavrepalanchok, Nuwakot, Lamjung and Dhading, as well as Kathmandu valley.

31,000 people have received temporary shelter kits and another 2100 families were with food.

In the coming two months, relief shall be extended to at least 175,000 people ensure families have protection from the rain and cold temperatures, especially before the monsoon rains begin in June.

Caritas Nepal Director Father Pius Perumana said in every district they are “prioritizing the most marginalized families, such as those whose lives have been most affected, are living in extreme poverty or have family members with disabilities.”

The 7.7 magnitude quake has affected some 8 million people with over 190,000 homes destroyed and over 175,000 more severely damaged.
