Sister-Jean-KennyBangalore: Sr Jean can cheer now: she has been given permission to stay on in Bangalore for one more month. In its advisory to the Foreigners Regional Registration Office, Bangalore, ministry of home affairs (MHA) official Dharkat R Luikang said UK national Jacqueline Jean McEwan, popularly known as Bangalore’s ‘Mother Teresa’, has been permitted to stay in India for one month starting July 25. “The matter is subject to the usual checks and nothing adverse,” the letter said.

The Sumanahalli Society off Magadi Road, where she had been working for leprosy patients for over three decades , wore a festive look: several inmates made a beeline to wish her. “We hope she remains here us for the rest of our lives. Without her, we are in the dark. Nobody would look after leprosy patients like her here if she’d left Bangalore on Monday,” said her close associate Mastan Saab.

Fr George Kannanthanam , director of Sumanahalli Society, said that Sr Jean will submit the necessary documents to the state home ministry and later to the MHA for further approval.”It feels great to be with my well-wishers, my own kith and kin, mostly those inflicted with leprosy. I will strive for their welfare. There is no meaning in going back to UK when my people are here,” she told TOI on Monday. MEA officials said while necessary endorsements will be made in her passport, if she wants to stay in Bangalore, she will have to give a fresh application as per ministry guidelines.
