Jason D’SilvaMaharashtra, January 18, 2012: A youth, who was one of the crew members of the Italian ship which sunk off the country’s west coast, said he thanked God that he survived the ordeal. “Standing at the edge of the deck, I left everything in the hands of the Almighty and just jumped,” said Jason D’Silva, who hails from Vasai in Mumbai said.

D’Silva jumped from the capsizing liner Costa Concordia onto a teetering lifeboat. He and other crew members of the ship have been accommodated in a hotel room in Rome. The luxury liner had sunk after it struck the rocks on the night of January 13 at the Giglio Island. Atleast 11 people have been killed in the incident.

Recalling the night of the incident, the 26-year-old youth said “the passengers had just finished dinner when I suddenly heard a deafening noise. I blanked out after that and only remember uttering a heartfelt prayer and jumping off the deck,” he added.

The following morning on January 14, Jason made a call to his friend and fellow resident Pravin Machado. He informed Machado that the lifeboat saved him and some fellow crew members to an island, where they were given shelter in a small church. “The locals who live near the church gave us blankets and brought us breakfast the next morning,” he told Machado.

Jason said that the authorities were busy helping crew members get their documents in order so they can speedily be returned to their homeland. “Our photographs are being clicked and the documents are being readied,” he added. In a bid to earn some extra money, Jason left his job in a Dubai-based five-star hotel and joined the liner.

This was Jason’s first stint on the inscrutable and turbulent seas. Jacinta, Jason’s mother, said, “My daughter-in-law told me about the accident. I couldn’t stop my tears and felt that I had lost everything to the sea.” Apart from Jason, five other Catholic crew members of the ship who hail from Vasai, survived.
