Kottayam, June 7, 2016: Few know that Bollywood actress Priyanka Chopra’s maternal grandmother, Madhu Jyotsana Akhauri (Mary John), is a Malayali from Kottayam.

The 94-year-old passed away in Mumbai on June 3, and Priyanka, along with her mother, Madhu Ashok Chopra, brother Sidharth, and other members of the family were in Kottayam to attend her funeral.

Her grandmother had always expressed a desire to be buried at the St John’s Attamangalam Jacobite Syrian Church in her hometown, Kumarakom. However, the church authorities denied permission for the funeral, on the grounds that she had married a Hindu.

“She had broken ties with the church post her marriage to a Hindu, and she lived as a Hindu. One is automatically disowned by the church under such circumstances. She could have re-joined the church while alive. But once a person is dead, we cannot accept the body for burial,” said a spokesperson from the church.

Later, the funeral was conducted at St Thomas Jacobite Church at Ponkunnam, situated in the same district. Meanwhile, the actress wrote on Twitter, “Rest in peace Nani. #Kerala #FinallyBackHome”
