The gathering at St. Mary’s Orthodox Syrian Church

Mumbai, July 9, 2013:  The Maharashtra Council of Churches in consultation with bishops Geevarghese Mar Coorilos and Prakash Patole, organised a seminar on ‘Issues faced by Christianity’ where various concerns of the community were highlighted. The sudden death of a family member unfortunately prevented Mar Coorilos, but his message emphasising ecumenism and unity was conveyed by Rev. Dr. Victor Golapally, the prime mover behind the meet.

Fr. Kurien of the Orthodox Syrian Church gave the exaltation at the seminar, which saw several denominations and organizations present viz. Church of North India, Orthodox Syrian Church, Methodist Church, Marthoma Church, Salvation Army, Assembly of God, YWCA, United Council and Ekta Manch.

The CSF general secretary, Joseph Dias and activist Dolphy D’souza spoke as resource persons highlighting persecution, attacks on the community’s institutions, properties, NGOs, etc. This was followed by an open house and discussion, where it was decided to enrol maximum Christians on the voting lists, besides campaigning against a proposed anti-conversion bill and championing the cause of the communal and targeted violence bill to help those affected.

The gathering also stressed the need to avail of government schemes and facilities, especially for education, in order that Christians are well represented in the civil services and professions, like medical and engineering. St. Mary’s Orthodox Church’s priest-in-charge Fr. PC Thomas and Fr. George hosted the delegates. Rev. Dr. Golapally said the MCC would organise a Prayer Rally for Christians of all denominations to publicly witness their faith and invited all to assist in making it a success.
