Bangalore: Sister Jean, a British national better known as Sumanahalli Society’s ‘Mother Teresa’ has been ordered to leave Bangalore, a city where she spent 30 years caring for leprosy patients. She said she wasn’t given any reason by authorities and was told to leave the country by Monday.
“I’m leaving with a heavy heart. I feel it’s not my loss alone but a loss to thousands of leprosy patients,” said 63-year-old Sr Jean, whose name is Jacqueline Jean McEwan. She’s from Newcastle and came to Bangalore in 1982 to Sumanahalli. When she applied for renewal of her resident permit in December 2010, she was denied permission to stay.
“I’ve been living with the resident permit issued by the Foreigner Regional Registration Office (FRRO) in Bangalore. But this time, the government denied the extension of the permit without assigning any reason. I have to leave on Monday,” she said.
On Saturday, her patients and those who close to her held a prayer meeting to bid her farewell. “I’m really upset and don’t know what to do. With the stigma attached to leprosy patients, she treated them undeterred by the stench and wounds. I feel Sumanahalli’s heart has been ripped out,” said Fr George Kannanthanam of Sumanahalli Society.
Sister Jean’s associate and field coordinator, Mastan Saab said, “She struggled to bring the family and children of leprosy patients to get educated and get them employed,” he added.
