Vailankanni: New CCBI Office-bearers & Vatican Delegate

New Office-Bearers for the CCBI : The Conference of Catholic Bishops of India (CCBI), celebrating its Silver Jubilee at Vailankanni, has elected new office bearers.  Cardinal Telesphore Toppo completed his term as the President of the Episcopal Body. The current  Plenary Assembly gathered at the Vailankanni Retreat House elected  Oswald Cardinal Gracias, Archbishop  of Mumbai as the new President. Archbishop Filipe Neri Ferrao of Goa and Bishop Varghese Chakkalakkal of Calicut who were both re-elected  as Vice-President and Secretary respectively for  the consecutive  second term of office.

It is very special and historical for Cardinal Oswald, who has been elected for a second time as the chief among the Bishops of the Roman  Latin Church in India and he is also the present President of the CBCI, besides being the Secretary General of the FABC.  The 126 Bishops reflected and deliberated on   “Pastoral Plan for the Church in India” on the occasion of the 25th Year of the establishment of the CCBI (1988-2013).

Visit of the Pope’s Delegate

Pope Benedict XVI is sending a special envoy  and  the Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples, Cardinal Fernando Filoni  from Vatican, Rome to solemnize the occasion of the Silver Jubilee of the CCBI  and the Golden Jubilee of the declaration of the Marian Shrine as a Minor Basilica (1962).

The Italian Cardinal is due to arrive for the festivities on 9 February.  The dedication of the newly constructed massive Morning Star Church by Cardinal Filoni in the presence of all the Cardinals, Archbishops and Bishops of India on Sunday 10 February will inaugurate and dedicate the newly constructed Morning Star Church as the culmination of the Gold Jubilee of the Basilica and of the Silver Jubilee of the CCBI.

On Sunday morning Cardinal Filoni will  address the CCBI Member – Bishops,  as  the special guest of honour and keynote speaker.  Then he will continue to visit the Extension Basilica churches and institutions of the Shrine.  Sunday evening, he presides over the Blessing Ceremony of the Morning Star Church followed by concelebrated solemn High Mass in the new church.  A public function is  organized for the chief guest Cardinal Filoni inside the Morning Star Church followed by a ‘Fellowship Meal’ for the dignitaries and for all the devotees.

Cardinal Filoni leaves for Chennai on 11th  Feb morning and visits St. Thomas Basilica church and St.Thomas tomb in Chennai.  From 13th Feb to 15th he visits Delhi and Ranchi and return to Rome on 16th February 2013.
